I gotta pass the time till Ashlands comes out somehow these blades were forged from 1084 bar stock in my small propane forge. the handles are oak one fire blackened to match the in-game aesthetic and the guards and peen-blocks are copper. while I had difficulty in getting the right distance for cutting on bottles the blades performed amazingly well both in cuts and thrusts. this is stupid, don't do this. it was fun tho. using an old cold steel 'tactical' katana machete, some kevlar fire wick, and a lot of drill bits I created the most dangerous thing I have made to date. the fuel used was white gas which gives the blade a roughly minute-long burn. the blade does heat up but not to the point of changing the temper at the edge so this is still a somewhat functional ...

    2:27 why is poplar so suitable for arrows? Are there other types of trees that makes for good arrows? Willow, Ash, beech?

    • @TheElvenArcher
      @TheElvenArcher 2 місяці тому

      You can make arrows from any wood that has straight grain and a bit of spring to it. Ash for sure, though it's a bit heavier. Willow and poplar are both in the salicaceae family so most species are pretty similar in terms of their wood properties.

    Carpet dulls even the best of knives, bad test before cutting wood.

    • @TheElvenArcher
      @TheElvenArcher 2 місяці тому

      It's got nothing to do with what knife does to the wood it's about what the wood does to the knife. Both blades cut through the same amount of material and one held a better edge.

    I think the main takeaway here is that there is a trade-off with both. The carbon is easier to resharpen and generally will be more tough than the stainless, and the stainless isn't going to rust and will hold its edge a bit longer. Great video.

    • @TheElvenArcher
      @TheElvenArcher 2 місяці тому

      its always a tradeoff, personally I always use the carbon because its easy to sharpen and I live in a dry climate, when I lived in Oregon I always carried the stainless so I dint have to deal with rust. saying "which is better" was really a misnomer on my part

    So your prime material does cost you less than 5$, but you've put so much love into those arrows that the commercial value of your finished product ends up being more than 10 times that value, lol. Ever though about selling your arrows to make some extra cash? Seriously! Btw, love your sense of humour, and thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge and experience.... There is no knowledge that isn't power, power to the people! I've made my own bows and arrows as a kid, it's such an intuitive (and safe) hunting weapon that it's hard to go wrong with it... like arrows do not necessarily need feather tails, lol. I'm sure they help with stabilisation, but for short range shooting I can do without... and at shorter ranges you can even throw the arrows at your target without using a bow, just throw them bo-shuriken style, lol. Takes a lot of practice but it's really cool. And very useful in case you accidently lose your bow, but still have the arrows 😂

  • @jmgalaxytab2325
    @jmgalaxytab2325 3 місяці тому

    The images that discouraged you are fear mongering pictures that are actually fake, which I can recognise as fake because I'm a graphical adept and also use your common sense: how is the penetration of the arrow HEAD into those hands even remotely RELATED to the MANUFACTURING of those arrows??? The point is the dangerous part, and since the point will never be in the line of fire of the hand that holds the bow, the only danger from a self made arrow, is if the arrow's body is made out of wood with many big nasty sharp splinters sticking out, that might get into your skin while shooting the arrow, but no way can you shoot an arrow through your own hand, no way.... those images were designed to scare people off so they wouldn't make their own arrows.... good thing you didn't let them stop you!

    • @TheElvenArcher
      @TheElvenArcher 2 місяці тому

      I have since found out that that image was from a video where a guy was shooting with a device that allows you to shoot very short arrows from a full size bow and obviously there was a mishap. still, its a possibility to be hurt by an arrow breaking however unlikely. I've had arrows break in my bow and they typically just fly apart and throw pieces outwards. scary but not usually dangerous.

    • @jmgalaxytab2325
      @jmgalaxytab2325 3 місяці тому

      I love to use my hands to make my own stuff, be it a slingshot, bow, or whatever artisanal thing it may be, like bongs and water pipes, flutes, so I'm not limited to artisanal weaponry lol, I just love to be creative with both head and hands, so I surely will make my own, but some people do have 2 left hands and also many people don't have the time or are too lazy, so selling your arrows to them would be a win-win for both parties... find the cheapest materials possible, but maintain a basic level of quality. I'm new at archery, except for my childhood experience, so I have no experience with professionally made arrows, but I suppose that even the best arrows will break eventually... so having to replace cheap arrows more often than more expensive ones is okay, just as long as the arrows do last a reasonable time and do not break in dangerous ways. The body of an arrow splitting in two while being shot might hurt the archer.... bamboo sounds like a good option and how about pvc pipes? So you won't have to loose that much material like when using dowels? And you might even order them precut at custom length... explore the possibilities, you clearly love to make arrows, at least when you made the video, so making money doing a thing you love to do, why not give it a try? And if nobody buys, at least you'll have enough arrows to use yourself, and it's no like they occupy a lot of space, make arrows and sell those that you don't need.
